Activities with New Hope Prior to 2014

Developing NHI’s Orphan Care Outreach
When in April 2013, four of New Hope’s Country Directors visited Vienna Presbyterian for a special missions event, they spent time with NPC support team members to discuss New Hope’s ministry advances in Eastern Europe and to assess new directions in orphan care and adoption. Joining the NHI and NPC representatives was Paul Beech of Keys Ministries, representing the Chisinau College of Theology and Education.

The group discussed marketing initiatives, New Hope’s family and secondary school outreach, and its work with orphans. Paul talked about the Social Work Department at the College and how CTE could contribute to New Hope‘s outreach activities in Moldova, Ukraine, and in other countries.

This meeting built on a May 2012 gathering at which New Nope and NPC members discussed new initiatives about orphans. The meeting in April examined New Hope trains its social workers assisting families who’ve adopted children and how the College of Theology and education—plus perhaps the Russian-American Institute– could assist New Hope. The group also discussed the alternatives of families’ adopting one, two, or many children (usually one or two is best) and how New Hope best utilizes its social workers, nearly all of whom are employed part-time.

Paul Beech (Keys), Roman Matviyiv, Dimitrie Todorov and Csilla Lesko enjoy a tasty breakfast and conversation.

Members of the group listen as Tinu Leontiuc (NHI Romania) talks about his team’s ministry.

Miley and Howard listen to Tinu as he describes NHI’s Romania outreach.

Csilla explains some of the materials the Hungarian NHI team is using as Dimitrie looks on.

NPC Marriage Ministry team hosts New Hope VP Reed Olson in March 2009.

On October 31, 2010, National Presbyterian and Vienna Presbyterian hosted a concert at NPC to build awareness within the two churches and the broader community of New Hope's activities and how the two churches are involved in support of New Hope. Music was provided by the baroque chamber group Ensemble Gaudior, whose director is a member at VPC. Ensemble Gaudior waived the majority of their concert fee as a gift to New Hope to make the concert possible. NHI's director Hank Paulson spoke, as did Board of Directors' Chair (and VPC member) John Hall, along with members of National Presbyterian who had been on New Hope trips. Audience members reported they very much enjoyed the baroque music and appreciated the interesting details about New Hope.

Although NPC’s principal work with New Hope involves Moldova, there are other areas of New Hope’s activities with which NPC members have become involved. In August 2005, one NPC Europe Committee member spent a week in Bratislava learning about New Hope’s activity there and helping with ideas for additional support the New Hope office could offer (see 2004 Trip Report). That member also invited a friend in Bratislava to help with several aspects of New Hope’s operations there. This trip also yielded ideas for New Hope support at NPC’s Alternative Gifts at Christmas Market.

Europe Working Group members went on a New Hope Vision Tour in 1997, where they saw first-hand how New Hope's ministry works and had opportunities to talk with workers. Working Group members have hosted New Hope workers on several occasions on their visits to Washington, DC churches and have held luncheon receptions for them so that other NPC members can learn about New Hope outreach activities. In November 2005, Working Group members hosted an evening in their home so that representatives of all the Washington area churches involved with New Hope could meet one another and exchange information about programs.
